St. George Orthodox Syrian Church, Vallikunnam
St. George Orthodox Syrian Church, Vallikunnam is a prominent and historic Christian church located under the Mavelikkara Diocese of Alappuzha district. This parish under the Malankara Orthodox Church has a historical tradition that is more than a century old.
The history and importance of this church can be briefly described as follows:
Historical background and origin
Mother Church: Before the establishment of a church of its own in the Vallikunnam area, the Malankara Orthodox believers here relied on the historic Kayamkulam Kadeesha Orthodox Valiyapalli for their spiritual needs.
Establishment of the Church: This church was established in the early 20th Century due to the increase in the number of believers in Vallikunnam and the desire to have their own place of worship due to the lack of transportation facilities. The church was founded in the name of St. George.
Reconstruction and the modern era
Due to the aging of the church and the increase in the number of believers, the parishioners decided to build a new, larger church in place of the old church building.
After years of hard work, the construction of the new church, built with beautiful architectural beauty, was completed and its consecration ceremony was performed on May 6, 1987.
Spiritual and social organizations
Several organizations are actively working under the church for the spiritual growth of the parish:
- Orthodox Syrian Sunday School
- Orthodox Christian Youth Movement (OCYM)
- Martha Mariam Women's Society
- All Malankara Ministerial Society (AMOSS)
- Prayer meetings, Children's Society, MGOCSM, etc.
Taking refuge in the intercession of Saint Geevarghese Sahada, a large number of believers from Vallikunnam and surrounding areas consider this large mosque as their spiritual center. The saint's feast day (May 5th and 6th) held every year in May is the most important celebration here.
